Xiaomi’s Android TV-powered Mi Box looks set to launch in October, and a recent leak suggests it could be even cheaper than expected. At just $69.99 this 4K streaming box may pose a big challenge to Google’s rivals.
The new price comes from YouTube user George Garrett, who spotted the Mi Box in stock at Walmart ahead of its official release. He was even able to purchase the device and quickly shot an unboxing video to share online, offering a detailed look at the Android TV player. But the biggest news is here is definitely the alleged price.
At just $69.99 the Mi Box would be the cheapest set-top box to offer 4K. The only other Android TV option is NVIDIA’s SHIELD, which costs a whopping $199. Roku’s new Premiere player comes extremely close with 4K support for $79.99, and the company’s non-4K options run as low as $29.99. Apple TV starts at $149 without 4K support, while Amazon’s Fire TV offers 4K for $99.99.
Of course, there are other factors to consider, but if 4K streaming and price are at the top of your list, the Mi Box may be the way to go. Google’s also expected to unveil a new Chromecast Ultra with 4K support for $69 at its October 4 event, offering another great option that runs Google software.
