Xiaomi said Thursday that it will launch the Redmi Note 3 in India on March 9, just under a week from now. The Redmi Note 3 was announced back in November, so the news here is that it’s expanding into a new market – one that should be particularly valuable for the Chinese smartphone maker.

Two different variations of the Redmi Note 3 will be sold in India, including an entry-level model with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage priced at   ₹9,999 (or about $146), and a slightly beefier model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage for ₹11,999 ($176). We typically recommend going with the most storage and RAM possible, since the latter should at least keep apps and future updates running smoothly. According to Android Central, the phones will be made in India.

The rest of the specs remain unchanged, so users in India should expect a 5.5-0inch display with a 1920 x 1080-pixel resoltuion, a 16MP camera, a microSD card slot for expanding storage (which means the 16GB model could be a good option if you need to save money), a 5MP front-facing camera, a Snapdragon 650 processor and a huge 4,000mAh battery. You go easy on the apps and gaming and this phone could probably last two days.

It’s a big launch for Xiaomi and consumers in India, and the popularity of the Redmi Note 3 seems to have expanded its grip to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook where the launch is trending. You can start to see why Apple and other firms are trying to enter those markets with lower-priced phones, too.
