It’s easy to see why any Android fan would want to get their hands on the new Xiaomi Mi MIX; it’s easily the prettiest smartphone we’ve seen this year. However, unless you live in China, you might as well forget the idea of bagging one for yourself.
In a thread on Reddit, Jai Mani, product manager for MIUI India, explained that there are currently no plans to bring the Mi MIX to other markets — and it doesn’t look like that will change in the foreseeable future.
“It’s still a concept so I don’t think it really makes sense to launch it in other markets,” wrote Mani. “Also we’re still a really small team in India. We have to consider each product very, very carefully given our limited resources.”
Mani also noted that marketing, sales, certification, and things like manuals and labelling are all stumbling blocks for launching a device in other countries.
Given that Xiaomi is yet to launch any smartphone outside of Asia, it’s probably not too surprising that the Mi MIX will be a China exclusive — especially when you take into account that this is a concept phone that will be available in limited quantities.
You might still be able to find Mi MIX online
It is possible to buy Xiaomi phones in the West through third-party sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay. However, due to demand what will likely be strong demand for the Mi MIX and the limited quantities available, you’re likely to be paying way over the odds for it.
Don’t be too disheartened, though. The Mi MIX gives us a glimpse at the future of the smartphone, and you can be sure we’ll see many more like it — with that stunning “edgeless” display — in the coming years.
