Xiaomi Mi5 release rumored for late Feb. as production picks up

Xiaomi’s Mi5 release date may finally be in sight. The company has apparently kicked its Foxconn production line into high gear ahead of a rumored launch on February 20.

The news comes from one Weibo commenter who shared an alleged photo from inside the factory. It doesn’t reveal the actual device, instead focusing on motivational banner that readers “Guarantee to Supply Mi5, Strive to Deliver the Highest Quality.” That suggests Foxconn is pushing its workers harder than ever to assemble the new smartphone.

The Weibo thread goes on to suggest that the Mi5 will be unveiled by February 20 if not earlier. The device should also be available to buy in China that day or very soon afterwards. Xiaomi previously said it planned to launch just after the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) on February 8, so it adds up.

For the first time in Xiaomi’s history it sounds like the company may have enough initial supply to meet the high demand its phones typically receive. Even so we wouldn’t be surprised to see first batch of Mi5 devices sell out based on everything we’ve heard so far.

Rumor has it the Mi5 will cost under $400 and offer flagship level specs. That includes a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, a 16-megapixel rear camera (8-megapixel in front), a 3600mAh battery and 4GB of RAM. It’s also expected to feature a sleek metal design and a fingerprint reader.

At this point we may already know pretty much everything about the Mi5, but hopefully Xiaomi can still manage to surprise us next month.
