See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloXiaomi’s Mi5 may be one of the most anticipated phones of the year, at least in China where the company racks up monster sales thanks to a devoted fan base. Now, a new leak on Chinese social network Weibo claims to reveal when the device will arrive and what new hardware it may offer.
According to Leaksfly, who has built up a bit of reputation for leaking smartphones on Twitter, the Mi5 will launch in November. It’s allegedly set to offer an upcoming Snapdragon 820 processor from Qualcomm, along with 4GB of RAM and either 16GB or 64GB of storage. This all lines up with a previously leaked roadmap, which also listed several future devices coming from both Xiaomi and its local rival Huawei.
It’s unclear why Xiaomi would wait so long to release the Mi5. Last year’s flagship Mi4 launched in July, meaning the company could take over a year to announce the successor. It’s possible Qualcomm’s current Snapdragon 810 chip isn’t quite up to snuff. As a result, Xiaomi may be stalling until later this year when a more powerful Snapdragon processor is available.
The Chinese upstart may also be positioning itself to compete directly with Apple, which is expected to announce new iPhones in September. The Cupertino company recently became China’s top smartphone seller, and Xiaomi may be hoping to steal the crown with its Mi5 later this year.
