See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloEarlier this year, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Box, a powerful 4K Android TV player set to launch in the U.S., but it didn’t reveal when it would arrive or how much it would cost. Now we may have the answer to both of those questions.
TechCrunch reports that the Mi Box will launch “as soon as October” for under $100, citing an anonymous Xiaomi source. That’s a pretty great deal considering the competition. NVIDIA’s SHIELD also offers 4K support but costs more that twice as much at $199.
The Mi Box also packs 2GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. It comes with a remote that offers built-in voice recognition. There’s also a separate gaming controller, but you’ll have to pay extra for the accessory.
Even so, the Mi Box is a pretty sweet offer, assuming it really does cost under $100. Xiaomi has a history of undercutting the competition, so we wouldn’t expect any less from its upcoming streaming set-top box.
As for the rumored October launch, that actually lines up with an earlier statement from Xiaomi’s global expansion chief Hugo Barra. Last month, Barra promise that a previously announced product would arrive in the U.S. in October. At the time, we guessed he was talking about the Mi Box, and it looks like we were right.
